Do you ever get the feeling that you or someone around you has changed? Like you don’t have anything in common with that person anymore?
It can be a pretty shocking realisation; especially if you were once very close and shared everything together… to suddenly feel in your heart that the two of you are no longer on the same wavelength.
It may not even be a friend… perhaps someone you have worked closely with for some time and felt a strong connection with… until one day you realise you no longer feel aligned or have anything in common with them.
You feel sad because they’ve been a part of your life for a long time and you’ve shared some amazing memories or successes. You feel scared… it would mean a big change in your life… what do you do?
I’m sure at least once you’ve pushed your feelings to one side and said nothing… carried on with the relationship but silently resenting the other person?
Am I right?
Now, I’d like to share something with you… perhaps you’ve already heard this quote before but not really given too much thought to how it applies to you?
“You are the average of the five people you spend most time with!” Jim Rohn
Wow. Just think about that for a second… choosing to stay around people who are not adding value to your life can limit your success?
Whereas you believe you’re “doing the right thing” by holding onto people that are not making a positive contribution to your life… what you’re really doing is limiting your success?!
Now I don’t know about you but when you see that phrased so bluntly, it’s pretty scary… right?
Knowing that hanging around with the wrong people is undoing all your hard work elsewhere… does that inspire you to take back control of your life?
Let’s look at it another way…
what if you had never given any thought to whether the people you surround yourself with are bringing a positive contribution to your life but you feel stuck… you know you have a difference to make and are committed to designing your ultimate lifestyle but, well… you’re not progressing as you hoped?
Are you simply the average of the five people you spend the most time with?
You see, there are some families where several generations have never worked and until someone breaks out of that negative pattern and begins to listen to people who believe they can fulfil their dreams, the story will continue into future generations.
If you surround yourself with people who don’t support or believe in your ambitions then your success could be limited too.
And very quickly, their limiting beliefs can become your roadblocks.
So, who are the people you spend the most time with? Are you more, or less average than you want to be right now?
After 7 yrs on the streets and just reacently braking up with my husband I know exatly what u mean. I have had to continually leave people thoughout my journey as I have developed pass our connection and have such a strong desire to better my life. I have said a lot of goodbyes and a lot of hello’s.
Sian- you are really an inspiration for people. I take my hat of you to you!!
Absolutely agree, funny because this is something I have been thinking about recently.
Infact I have applied it to my recruitment process. I only want to hire people smarter than me, as I spend so much time working with these people I want to be surrounded by people who will life and challenge me.
Anyway great post. Thanks
Hi John Paul,
What a great way of thinking about it. I love it. You have inspired me in my recruitment process too!
Jo
hey joanna that was really an inspiring article of yours.great work 🙂
It’s really very nice sharing….I was already knowing but the article helped me to realise the fact. We should always try to be the part of team or group from which we get positive strockes / energy which help us to grow in right direction.
